Historical Manhole Covers and Storm Drains in Ivano-Frankivsk

February 24, 2019

Ivano-Frankivsk, formerly known as Stanisławów, was one of the largest cities in Galicia, and so it is no wonder that many relics of its prewar past can still be found in the urban landscape. In particular, quite a few manhole covers and storm drains still serve the city’s infrastructure.  From […]

Photographs of the Lemberg-Czernowitz Railway (1868)

The railway first came to Lviv (Lemberg) in 1861, connecting the city to Przemyśl as part of the connection from Krakow. In 1866 a railway was built connecting Lviv to Chernivtsi (Czernowitz). As a result, the capitals of two Austro-Hungarian crownlands Galicia and Bukovina were connected not only to each other, […]

Lederer & Popper Montage Postcards of Galicia and Beyond

Over 100 years ago the Prague-based company Lederer & Popper created a series of colored photomontage postcards featuring various cities, in particular in the Austrian and German Empires. I first came across a few photomontages from Lviv and was particularly struck by the one depicting a woman who had fallen […]

Ghost Signs in Ivano-Frankivsk

It was built in the mid-17th century as a private fortress. Along with Lviv, in 1772 it became part of the Austrian Empire, then part of the […]

While many old Jewish cemeteries still remain arou While many old Jewish cemeteries still remain around Galicia, the same cannot be said of the Jewish burial grounds in Lviv. Only discovered fragments of their ancient tombstones (matzevah) — which were used by the Nazis and Soviets as pavement and building material — remind us of the two city and three suburban village cemeteries that once existed in and near Lviv. Just as the synagogues and other Jewish traces, the cemeteries were destroyed during World War II. Here are some matzevah that have been returned to the former Jewish Cemetery off of former Janowska (today Shevchenka) Street.

Sts. Volodymyr and Olha Church in Ukrainian Villag Sts. Volodymyr and Olha Church in Ukrainian Village, Chicago. Built 1971-1973. This is the church I attended when I was growing up. "Sts. Volodymyr and Olha Ukrainian Catholic Parish in Chicago was founded in 1969 out of a desire to preserve and faithfully adhere to the traditions of the Ukrainian Church over generations to come. Employing the Byzantine-Ukrainian style of 11-13th century Ukraine, the church is cruciform with the altar facing east. The design avoids right angles as much as possible, favoring rounded arches and vaults and a striking gold dome. A mosaic above the entrance depicts the Christianization of Ukraine, and there is a statue of Patriarch Josyf Cardinal Slipyj (1892-1984), the parish’s founder. Patriarch Slipyj was held prisoner in the Soviet Union’s Siberian labor camps for 18 years, only released in 1963 through the intervention of Pope John XXIII and President Kennedy. He worked to restore self-government to the Ukrainian Catholic Church." Description from openhousechicago.org
