Solomiya Krushelnytska: The Galician Who Rescued Puccini’s Madame Butterfly

The six-petal rosette, also known as a hexafoil, h The six-petal rosette, also known as a hexafoil, has ancient origins and a rich history across various cultures and religions. Often regarded as a solar symbol, the rosette held significant mystical importance and adorned an array of items, including doors, ceiling beams, crosses, cornices, coats of arms, furniture, musical instruments, ritual objects, and graves.
In ancient Slavic tradition, the rosette was associated with the chief pagan god Perun, the god of thunder and lightning, and was believed to provide protection against lightning.
Although the it was present throughout Galicia, the rosette found its most enduring presence in Carpathian architecture and applied art. Historians and architects of the fin de siècle period extensively studied its prevalence in highlander culture and incorporated it into folk-inspired architectural movements.
Here are examples of the rosette on buildings in Lviv that were built in the Hutsul Secession and Zakopane Style: Residence at 29 Vyshenskoho St. (1909); Tadeusz Czarnecki and Felicja Smulikowska’s House on Pekarska St. (1906); Bursa of the Deacons of the St. Yura Cathedral on Ozyrkevycha St. (1904); Józef Skwarczyński Tenement House (1907) on Chuprynky St.; and Dnister Insurance Company Building (1906).

My favorite house in Vlasna Strikha (Własna Strze My favorite house in Vlasna Strikha (Własna Strzecha) -- a housing development built for city officials and civil servants in 1928-1932. The project was inspired by Ebenezer Howard's "garden city" concept. Architect Władysław Klimczak together with Maksymilian Koczur and M. Kolbuszewski designed 24 private homes in Polish Manor style (styl dworkowy) featuring volutes, porticos, and two-level hipped roofs. Today, many of the houses have undergone renovations and have lost their authentic look. This particular one, nestled behind the lush foliage, remains well-preserved.

I used to think the inscription "Lwoska" (adjectiv I used to think the inscription "Lwoska" (adjective from the Polish Lwów) on this series of old storm drains was an example of a misspelling of the word "Lwowska." But after learning that "Krakoska" was used in the Polish local regional dialect, I also learned the same was true for Lviv.

Galician Ukrainian Diaspora Language, Part II: Str Galician Ukrainian Diaspora Language, Part II: Stress
When I moved to Ukraine, I had to learn not only a new vocabulary, as many of the words I grew up speaking in the diaspora were dialectisms, Polonisms, or archaisms, but also adjust the pronunciation of certain words. The stress placement in Galician Ukrainian differs from that of standard Ukrainian spoken in Ukraine today. In some cases, the stress patterns in Galician are closer to Polish than to modern Ukrainian.
It's important to note that the stress patterns of Ukrainian words underwent changes during the period of Russification initiated by the 1933 Orthography. However, I am unsure which words precisely had their stress altered as part of Russification and which are specific to the Galician dialect.
Here are examples of words with different stress patterns between Galician and standard Ukrainian.
Btw, today it's more common to hear this way of pronouncing words in the diaspora, where the Galician dialect has been better preserved than in Galicia itself.
