Ivan Franko: His Visits to Tsishky and Phenomenal Memory

December 25, 2015

My great grandmother had the honor of meeting Ivan Franko, who used to visit her aunt and uncle’s library in the village of Tsishky (today Chishky), near Oleskyi Zamok. Her aunt and uncle were Toma Dutkevych, the parish priest and one of the founders of the agricultural organization Silskyi Hospodar, […]

Forgotten Galicia
At the old railway station in Dobromyl, you can fi At the old railway station in Dobromyl, you can find Austrian-era tiles with geometric patterns. These tiles were manufactured at the Hermann Wagner cement factory in Przemyśl, as indicated by the tile bearing the signature "H. Wagner Przemyśl" at the station's main entrance. The factory supplied tiles for various cities, and you can still find them in historic buildings in Drohobych, Lviv, Przemyśl, and Jarosław. The station itself was constructed in 1872 to serve the Hungarian-Galician Railway, the inaugural Transcarpathian railway linking Galicia with Hungary and connecting Lviv to Budapest through Przemyśl. The station has remained largely unaltered until today, but signs of wear and tear are becoming increasingly evident, with the tiles, in particular, showing their age. Thank you to Maria Hrom-Vurlovska for sending me these photos and bringing attention to the history of Dobromyl.

On Saturday, thanks to a guided tour organized by On Saturday, thanks to a guided tour organized by @lvivcitywalks, I gained a new perspective, both figuratively and literally, on my favorite street in Lviv - Vyshenskoho. Not only did I learn more about the history of the street and the architects who built it, but also had the opportunity to enter two buildings that provided great views of the street. The highlight of the day was visiting the lovely corner apartment with the spectacular oriel window (first photo).

The former Industrial School, built 1907-1909, arc The former Industrial School, built 1907-1909, architects Władysław Sadłowski and Adolf Weiss, in the style of Late Secession. On the building facade is one of the few places in Lviv you can still find the coats of arms of the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria. This particular coat of arms, introduced in 1782, had symbols representing the four territories of the province: Galicia, Lodomeria, Auschwitz, and Zator. Here the eagles for Auschwitz and Zator have been lost. Even though a new coat of arms was introduced in 1804 (featuring a jackdaw and three crowns), this coat of arms was used until the fall of the empire in 1918.
