April 3, 2021

By Daniel Carkner Frank Seiden is an enigmatic figure of the early Jewish entertainment world in the United States. Born in Galicia in 1860, he arrived in New York’s Lower East side in 1877 and eventually became known as a street performer, magician, and vaudeville actor. By 1900 he became […]

Historically, coat hangers (for drying, brushing, Historically, coat hangers (for drying, brushing, and airing them out) were often integrated into the ironwork of gallery banisters across Lviv’s courtyards. While most feature simple, curved designs, here is a unique example in which the coat hangers take on the shape of a menorah. As we can see here, nowadays these fixtures are sometimes used as plant hangers.
Additionally, this courtyard retains traces of an old coal lift, a feature originally included in the building’s plans.

Sadly, some of Lviv’s historic buildings have fallen into disrepair—crumbling facades, unstable balconies, and falling plaster all pose dangers to those passing by. Makeshift warning signs serve as reminders that even beautiful architecture can become hazardous when neglected.

Yet amid numerous hardships Ukraine faces, in particular the ongoing war, restoration efforts continue, and progress is being made to preserve and revive Lviv’s architectural heritage. The need to safeguard our historical buildings remains as urgent as ever.
In addition to the beautifully painted walls and c In addition to the beautifully painted walls and ceiling, the entrance hall in the Secession style building I posted about yesterday features elegant tiles and even an indoor boot scraper—a rare find indoors. At the very bottom of the first picture you can see a top view of this once-essential shoe cleaner.

A couple of weeks ago I finally had the chance to A couple of weeks ago I finally had the chance to see this beautiful entrance hall, adorned with exquisitely restored floral wall and ceiling paintings. The ornaments belong to an early-20th-century Secession-style apartment building in the Kastelivka neighborhood. During the Soviet era, the paintings were whitewashed, concealing them for decades. A few years ago, specialists discovered that the decorations extend not only across the ceilings but also along the walls of all three floors. Thanks to funding from the residents, the restoration was carried out by experts from the Garda workshop.

The Roman Catholic Chapel of Our Lady Queen of the The Roman Catholic Chapel of Our Lady Queen of the Polish Crown in Kuhayiv, a neo-Gothic structure, was completed in 1913.

The chapel’s construction followed a prolonged conflict between the local Greek Catholic priest and the Roman Catholic provost from Vovkiv (Wołków). Until then, the Roman Catholic provost would hold Mass at the Kuhayiv (Kuhajów) Greek Catholic church several times a year. However, in 1909, the priest banned him from entering the church. This move shocked even the local Ukrainian villagers.

In 1930, a memorial was erected in front of the chapel to honor Polish soldiers who had fallen in battles against the Bolsheviks.

In April 1946, the local Roman Catholics, together with the provost of Vovkiv, and a significant part of the church property, left for Poland. The closed chapel was likely used for agricultural purposes during the Soviet era.

Today, the chapel is in a state of ruin: the windows are shattered, the once-towering spire that crowned the building has collapsed inward, a massive hole gapes in the roof, the walls are cracked in places, and the bricks are crumbling and falling apart.
