Servus! My name is Areta and I am the person behin Servus! My name is Areta and I am the person behind Forgotten Galicia. I want to take this moment to thank each of you for your interest in Galicia and for following along. I’d also like to share a bit more about my project and myself. This is a one-person passion project that I create and run entirely on my own. I work on it in my spare time, alongside my full-time job in IT. I am the granddaughter of World War II refugees from Galicia. I was born and raised in the United States, where I was active in the Ukrainian community of Chicago, which was primarily made up of Galician Ukrainians. In 2011, I moved to Lviv—the former capital of the Habsburg crownland of Galicia and the heart of my ancestral region. While most of my ancestors were Ukrainians from Galicia, I discovered after relocating that I also have Polish, Austrian, and German heritage from the area. My project aims to collect, document, and help preserve remnants of Lviv’s and Galicia’s past—particularly from the Habsburg era—before they are forgotten or lost. I strive to popularize the architecture and history of the region, bringing its rich heritage to a wider audience. My goal is also to unite people of different ethnic backgrounds who share an ancestral connection to Galicia. Forgotten Galicia also has a website (forgottengalicia.com) and Facebook page. Autumn at Lychakiv Cemetery (Cmentarz Łyczakowski Autumn at Lychakiv Cemetery (Cmentarz Łyczakowski). After its creation in 1786 as a municipal cemetery, it became the main necropolis for Lviv’s intelligentsia and the middle and upper classes. St. Sophia Church, a former Roman Catholic church St. Sophia Church, a former Roman Catholic church built in 1594 with funding from Zofia Hanelowa. The original wooden church was destroyed by the Turks during a siege of Lviv in 1672. A new stone one was built in 1760-1765. The surrounding neighborhood is called Zofiówka / Sofiyivka, named after the church.
