I don't know if this site is still active, figured I'd try. Doing research I cannot find anything beyond my great grandfather. Was it common for an immigrant from Austria to change their last name? Even in the US there is only census records. Doing a simple search of Andrew Frank Hirscy, brings up Hirsch. Just curious if that was pretty common to change names like that.

The info for Areta Kovalska.
I am the grand-son of Ludwik Hirsch, the youngest brother of Rafal, Piotr, Jan, Franciszek + sisters.
In my possesion are the Hirsch family old documents including birth (baptism) cetificates of Margaretha Kintera 1783 (wife of Mathias Hirsch) and Philipp 1816 , her son, as well as the mariage document of Mathias and Margaretha 1809 in Prelauc (now Czech Republic). I visited personally the graves of Hirsches in Lvov and Ponikwa, shown in your pictures. I can share with you the scans and photos of these documents, as well as family info. Send me your e-mail and I will answer

In the last 4 sentences you confuse WW1 with WW2. For WW1 I recommend you to follow the project on Austro-Hungarian prisoners of war initiated by my friend Peter Felch: spurensuche-turkestan.org, there is also an interview with him on Novastan.org. During WW2 Stalin allowed General Anders to collect Polish and other POWs in the SU to fight Nazi-Germany in the West - but Stalin had already murdered thousands of officers in Katyn and other locations. The army of general Anders left the SU via Iran, Lebanon and fought in Monte Cassino. Later many soldiers settled in Britain, Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand.
